How to get rid of hornets

How to get rid of hornets

If you have noticed a swarm of hornets buzzing near your home every day for a while, you may want to get rid of them. If you are allergic to bees, you may want to have a professional remove them for you. If you are up for the challenge, here are a few easy methods to help you get rid of hornets.

Method #1: How to remove one or two hornets

If a hornet is inside your home, they are not there on purpose. They have lost their way and have ventured in and now they don’t know how to get out. Keep in mind, they are nervous because they don’t know where their swarm is so they may be easily agitated. You can simply roll up a paper or use a fly swatter in order to get rid of them. There may be an occasion where they have actually made a nest in your attic or attached to a nearby wall. If this is the case, you are going to see more than one.

Method #2: Use a trap made with vinegar

You can make a vinegar trap to lure the hornets in and then they can’t get out. You will need a two-liter bottle, tape or staples, a knife to poke holes, string to hang it, and vinegar.

First, cut the neck of the bottle off and turn it upside down into the base of the bottle so it looks like a funnel. Use tape or staples to secure it. Poke holes inside the trap and thread string through the holes so you can hang it on a branch.

Pour apple cider vinegar and a drop of any type of dish detergent. Hang the trap close to where you have seen hornets buzzing around. If you see them in the spring, they are working on their home and you want to get rid of them quickly. The hornets will smell the apple cider vinegar. They will go down into the funnel and will be unable to get back out.

Method #3: A bucket trap

This method is similar to the trap mentioned above. You will need a bucket, some dish detergent, and either water and sugar, or water and vinegar. The point of this trap is to lure the hornet inside and then they will drown. Buckets are easier to hang from eaves and difficult places where they may want to build their home.

Place the sugar and water or the water and vinegar inside the bucket until it is ¼ of the way full. Curious hornets will smell the sourness of the vinegar or the sweetness of the sugar and see what is going on and then get trapped inside. You can also prevent the hornets from making a nest by hanging items that make noise in the trees and around the eaves.

You can purchase some of these deterrents at your local home improvement store. They are inexpensive and they could prevent an infestation of hornets this coming summer.
