How to identify a hornet infestation?

How to identify a hornet infestation?

During the summer months, you may one day notice a larger number of hornets flying around in one particular area. You may also notice a nest that has been built up in the last few days. Hornets use decayed wood to help build a nest. This could mean that you have an infestation starting and you need to get rid of it as quickly as possible. You can’t remove all infestations in the same way. The first step you will want to do is to identify the type of hornet you are dealing with.

Identifying a Hornet by Appearance

To identify which hornet you are dealing with, look for features that stand out on the hornet without getting too close.

*Bald-faced hornets are large in size, black all over except for the face, which is mostly white.
*Asian giant hornets are large in size, brown with yellow and brown stripes on the abdomen. Their face is a pale color and they can be up to one-inch long.
*European hornets are large in size and have a brown body with yellow and orange stripes around the abdomen. Their body is ¾ inch to 1 ½ inch long.

As you see, hornets have a lot of similarities and it may take a little while of observation before you can recognize what type of hornet you are dealing with.

Conclusion

If you see two or three hornets buzzing around over a long period of time, they could just be there searching for food because they are attracted to the sweet nectar smells found in some flowers. However, if you see several hornets within a short period of time, you may want to observe them for a bit to determine where they are going to after they leave you and this is where you will find their nest. Don’t try to remove a nest as soon as you see it. You will need to do your research to determine when the best time to remove a hornet nest is and how to do it efficiently. A nest during the day will not have all the hornets inside. As soon as the hornets on the outside of the nest see what is going on, they will come and attack you instantly. Remember, a hornet is designed to sting repeatedly.
