What attracts hornets?

It’s important to keep in mind, hornets are not aggressive. They just want their share of the world too. They will normally leave humans and pets alone unless they feel threatened somehow. If you see hornets buzzing by every once in a while, you may want to know what keeps them coming back so you can get rid of it or change it so they will decide to leave your home and go somewhere else.

Hornets may be there because of food

Hornets love sugar and protein. If you have sweet things outside, you may be attracting hornets and you don’t even know it. Sweet things can include rotting fruit on the ground under a fruit tree. It could also be fresh fruit that you cut up and took outside to eat while you soak up some sun. Hornets like sap from trees. Hornets will actually peel back bark to reach the sap from the tree. They aren’t attracted to all trees but if you are seeing enough of them, chances are they have found some sap.

Hornets need and like protein. If you have a honey bee nest close by, or if you are a beekeeper, this could attract the hornets. Hornets will kill adult honey bees and take the larvae and pupae back to their nest. The larvae contain a syrup that is sweet and the adult hornets will lap it up.

If you have a fruit tree, pick up the fruit that falls to avoid attracting the hornets. If you purchase a tree that saps, you may want to plant it away from your yard to avoid any confrontation with a hornet. If you are a beekeeper, ensure that your bee boxes are built to withstand a hornet. If not, repair it before spring to keep them safe.

Hornets may be looking for a home

If you are seeing a hornet, that may be because they are looking for a home that is safe. Hornets will search for a home in crevices of your home, cracks, hollow walls within, or insulated walls.

Hornet queens hibernate through the winter and emerge in the spring to look for the best place to build a nest. Any of these areas in or around your home could be just what they are looking for.

Do an inspection around your home to see if there are any visible areas that could be a potential home for a hornet’s nest and take care of it quickly to avoid an infestation. If you have outbuildings and barns on your property, do the same thing to them to avoid an infestation.
