Getting rid of fleas and completely treating a flea infestation is not easy and most times it requires continuous treatment for several weeks before you can eventually breathe a sigh of relief. Fleas may be very tiny, but they are very capable of unleashing real terror and making your pet’s life a nightmare.
These parasites should have no place in your home, but somehow, they seem to show up. Thankfully, there are a number of ways to keep these insects away and ensure they never show up in your home again.
And if you don’t want to use any potentially poisonous chemicals and insecticides in your home, then we have some non-toxic natural home remedies for keeping your home free of fleas and you can easily formulate your own special homemade flea spray using only natural and safe ingredients.
Some of these remedies may seem very unlikely to work while others look like the real deal. Anyway, here are seven DIY home remedies for getting rid of fleas.
Dish soap and water
You can use dish liquid to create a flea trap and get rid of these creepy insects. To create your flea trap, fill a bowl with warm water and dish soap, and place it where there is the most flea activity in your home. This may be some of the areas your pets love to hang out or around the carpets or upholstery, and for this trick to work, it’s best to set it at night because fleas tend to be more active at night.
Salt
Salt is believed to get rid of adult fleas because it acts as a dehydrating agent and works to drive away fleas. To use this method, sprinkle a generous amount of finely ground salt on carpets and leave it there for about 2 days, then proceed to vacuum the carpet. The efficacy of this method is not certain but there are claims that it works. Instead of salt, baking soda can be used and the method remains the same.
Lemon spray
Another natural flea remedy is citrus spray prepared by slicing up lemons and soaking them in a pint of water and then bringing it to a boil. This solution should be left to sit overnight before application. Pour your lemon spray into a small spray bottle and proceed to spray it around your home with more attention on items like bedding, carpet, and upholstery where fleas are more likely to hide. This is sure to make your home smell nice, but as to how efficient it is, you can find out for yourself.
Rosemary powder
Rumor has it that rosemary is a natural flea repellent. It is said to work well against small flea infestations as the rosemary powder (often mixed with other herbs) works to repel fleas. To prepare this mixture, collect some rosemary, rue, wormwood, fennel, and peppermint and grind all five into a fine powder. Sprinkle this powder in strategic places around your home and let it do its job, repel fleas. You can also use it to prevent any future flea infestations.
Diatomaceous earth
Diatomaceous earth is the remains of fossilized algae, it’s usually a very fine non-toxic powder and a great natural remedy to get rid of fleas. And like salt, this powder causes dehydration. You can use diatomaceous earth to get rid of fleas by sprinkling it around your home, especially on carpets, and corners where fleas may be hiding. Make sure you purchase food-grade diatomaceous earth which is non-toxic and wear gloves and a mask for this procedure because this powder is known to cause some irritation to the eyes and throat.
Herbal flea spray
An herbal flea spray is made by mixing about 4 liters of vinegar with 2 liters of water, 500 ml of lemon juice, and 250 ml of witch hazel. When sprayed around the home, this mixture is believed to drive fleas away, and since it’s non-toxic for pets and kids, there isn’t any harm in giving it a try, it may just be worth it.
Continuous vacuuming
This is one of many effective ways of getting rid of even the tiniest traces of fleas. Vacuuming every inch and corner of your home on a daily basis will give fleas no room to breed and survive. Although it will not kill adult fleas, vacuuming gets rid of tiny flea eggs, larvae, and pupae which make up a large percentage of an entire infestation. Vacuuming alone cannot solve a flea infestation as it needs to be accompanied by another remedy that gets rid of adult fleas.
