Do flea bombs work?

Do flea bombs work?

Fleas are definitely a nuisance and if you have these tiny vampires in your home, then surely you’re ready to do just about anything to get rid of them. Naturally, you’ve done your research and you’ve come across a ton of remedies and solutions that some people swear by, and maybe one of them is flea bombs. And now you’re looking to find out just how effective flea bombs are. For starters, flea bombs or flea foggers are designed to release a cloud of insecticide, made from anti-flea chemicals, in your home which in turn kills off every adult flea around. The chemicals contained in flea bombs are usually harmful, therefore the entire household, including pets, will have to leave the building when the fogger is set to work, and everyone will need to stay away for a couple of hours.

So, do flea bombs work?

Sure, flea bombs kill fleas because they contain a mixture of chemicals that kill adult fleas, but just adult fleas. They don’t get the entire flea population nor do they stop an infestation, this is because flea bombs don’t kill flea eggs, larvae, and pupae. And unfortunately, adult fleas only make up 5% of an entire flea infestation, and a whopping 95% are flea eggs, larvae, and pupae. Since flea bombs are only effective in taking out adult fleas, using one of these products alone will not solve your flea infestation.

However, when combined with other effective remedies for treating a flea infestation, like consistent vacuuming and dry-cleaning, then the result will be greatly improved. Another reason why flea bombs may not be very effective in killing fleas, even adult fleas, is because the insecticide is released into the air and may not get to places where these insects are actually hiding. The insecticide will treat places like the floor, draperies, and furniture, but not tiny cracks and crevices, or between sheets and fabrics. Fleas actively avoid light and you can find them hiding in dark and warm places, if the  insecticide doesn’t get to these areas it may not effectively take out these fleas and they will emerge when the cloud disperses.

Are flea bombs safe?

The chemicals in flea bombs are not safe which is why it’s advised that everyone, including pets, leave the building when the fogger is set to work and continue to stay away at least a couple of hours. When a cloud of this fine-particle aerosol is released in your home, it will settle on surfaces and kill many other insects including ants and cockroaches. But they will also contaminate these surfaces, making your home a little unsafe for your pets if they are sensitive to the chemicals in the fogger. To avoid a potential health hazard, ensure you open up all the doors and windows to let in plenty of fresh air, and keep the house well ventilated.
