Wasps are non-aggressive insects in the bee family however, there are occasions where they are not afraid to sting. When a wasp stings, it will sting over and over again. You would have to do something really bad to get stung by a wasp. Two things that wasps won’t take from humans is if you are purposely attacking their nest and if you make them angry by waving your arms in front of your face and hitting them. You are probably thinking back to several times when you waved your hands in front of your face and never got stung. During the last part of the summer months, the colony members are training the queens for hibernation. It is during this time that the wasp workers are confused and that is why you are more likely going to get stung if you wave your hands in front of your face.

How Long Does a Sting Hurt?

Once a wasp stings you, the sting can last for up to a week before completely disappearing. The pain you initially feel immediately after being stung can last about two days. You will notice that the area will stay red and swollen before it gets better. The actual pain from a wasp sting that you will feel will last up to fifteen minutes before it wears down.

Can Wasp Stings Be Fatal?

A person that is stung by one wasp will experience mild pain but it goes away. A possible fatal sting will be approximately 10 to 15 stings at once. If you receive a sting that is causing an allergic reaction or if you get stung by several different wasps, you need to seek medical treatment.

Symptoms of a Wasp Sting

For those who are not allergic to wasp stings, a few normal symptoms include:

  • Swelling around the sting site
  • Redness around the sting site
  • Pain
  • Itching

These symptoms will decrease or completely go away within 48 hours of the sting.

If you are allergic to wasp stings, you will experience the above symptoms and

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • And extreme swelling as well as redness

These symptoms could be dangerous so you may want to seek medical treatment as soon as possible.

Other symptoms that you may experience that is not on this list that may indicate that you are having an allergic reaction to the wasp sting include:

  • Stomach cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Having trouble breathing
  • Increased heart rate
  • Anxiety

These are signs that you could be going into anaphylactic shock and need immediate medical treatment.
