How to get rid of a bee nest?

Bees can nest on your property as nuisance critters and cause you trouble. They are stinging insects, and occupants of your property could be at risk of their sting after they infest your property. Persons that are allergic to bee stings can suffer serious consequences from their stings.

Research has indicated that every year, millions of emergency hospital visits in the US are because of insect stings. For bees, the consequence of a sting could be death, in persons where systemic allergic reactions occur. Getting rid of a bee nest is an important part of preventing bee stings. You should be especially committed to removing bee nests in the period where they are most active and stings are bound to occur.

If you live in an area that is prone to bee infestations, always check for their nests and remove them. The process of getting rid of bee nests is highlighted below. Follow these steps to remove bee nests from your property.

Know the threat

You should start by identifying the type of insect on your property. Wasps could be mistaken for bees and vice versa. This is why you should start by confirming that the insects on your property are bees. Several distinguishing features tell bees apart from wasps. These features include the physical features, the nesting pattern, and the diet.

After confirming that it is a bee infestation, you should follow up by identifying the type of bee. This is because some bees are more aggressive than others. Some bees only occupy an area for a cycle which could be a year. If the bee only occupies an area for a short period, you could wait for when it leaves for that cycle and destroy the nest. When you know the threat, you can respond strategically and remove the bee nest efficiently.

Get your tools ready

For the removal of a bee nest to be effective, you need to get the right tools. You will need a ladder to access the nest if it is located high up. You will also need protective clothing to keep yourself safe from bee stings. The basic protective clothing is gloves, masks, trousers, a face cap, and a long-sleeved shirt.

You will need an insecticide if you plan to kill the insects before moving the nests. The insecticides could be bee sprays or dust insecticides. Bee sprays are suitable for nests that are located in high locations. For bees located in easily accessible locations, dust insecticides should do. Read the instructions and labeling of the insecticides, and be sure that it is safe and legal to use in your area.

Apply the insecticide

If you choose to kill the bees with insecticides, it is best that you apply the insecticide at night. The bees will all be in the nest at night. You will also have lesser chances of being stung by the bees. While applying the insecticides, ensure to stand beside the nest and not below it, especially if the nest is located at a high level. After applying the insecticides, seal the nest so that the insecticides can achieve a high concentration, and all forms of the bees will be killed.

Remove the nest

Insecticides usually kill bees in an average of two days. After the bees die, you can then remove the nest and have your property free of the critters.  If you notice bee activity, you should reapply the insecticides until they are all gone. After you are sure that all the insects are dead, remove the nest wearing protective clothing. If the nest is on a higher level, you could use a rake or stick to bring it down. Removing bee nests from your property is important for removing current infesting insects and preventing future infestations.
