What attracts wasps?

What attracts wasps?

Wasps can be very annoying around your home, your vehicle, while outside on a picnic, or just doing your chores around the house. There could be a way that you can stop attracting wasps around you in your home, your property, or wherever you are.

If you see one or two wasps, then chances are they are just passing by. If you continue to see wasps every day, you may have a nest nearby. If you want to avoid attracting wasps, here are a few things that you can avoid.

#1: Shelter

Wasps don’t build nests unless they feel that they can get food fairly easily. They need for the walls of their nest to be insulated so they look for cracks or crevices to build a nest in.

During the fall, the male wasps soon die off after they impregnate the queens. The queens will then hibernate for the winter after finding a nice warm place that is protected and will emerge in the spring when it’s time to build a nest and leg eggs.

#2: Availability of Food

Once the queen is ready to emerge from hibernation, she needs food immediately for herself and her eggs that she has laid. If you have ample insects around your yard or home, they are going to build a nest close by so they can have plenty to eat throughout the summer.

#3: You Have Flowers Around Your Home

Flowers planted around the home is a sure way to attract wasps because wasps like the nectar as an added food source and they love the smell of the flowers. Even the smell of some perfumes will attract the wasps.

#4: Meats from a BBQ or in the Trash

Wasps like protein-based foods so if you have thrown some out in your trash can or if you are grilling outdoors, you are most likely going to attract wasps because they will smell it and will travel to see what is going on. If you see a wasp hanging around your picnic, they are not there to harm you, they are there because they smell meat.

#5: The Wasps Smell Sweet Treats

During the latter part of the winter, before they die out, protein-based diets are no longer in style and they will develop somewhat of a sweet tooth instead. They like to hang around fruit that has fallen from the trees and is souring. They will also come around cans of soda if they smell the sweetness. The same for fruit juices. Kids normally take a few drinks before leaving their juice on the counter or table and running back out into the yard. The wasp will smell the juice and try to get into the juice to have some.
