Do cockroaches have predators?

Do cockroaches have predators?

Humans are not fans of cockroaches at all. Our main aim when we spot a cockroach is to eliminate it before it grows massively in number and becomes an unimaginable nuisance. We do not think of killing them for livelihood but just to live peacefully without any problems. However, not all beings think like that. Sometimes cockroaches die because of natural reasons but other times they do not. Some creatures prey on cockroaches and feed on them to survive. Even though they may seem insignificant or unimportant to us, for other creatures they are nothing short of a blessing.

Natural Predators

We think way too negatively about cockroaches. Yes, for us cockroaches are not very beneficial but for other creatures, cockroaches provide a healthy source of nutrients such as protein. These insects are an excellent source of many healthy nutrients that animals like amphibians and reptiles get once they feed on it. Some of the most common predators that cockroaches have are mentioned below.
1.     Toads
2.     Lizards
3.     Frogs
4.     Wasps
5.     Beetles
6.     Entomopathogenic fungi

All the above animals have a unique and distinct way of attacking cockroaches. Just like all other animals that exist, cockroaches play an important part in maintaining the ecosystem. Toads and frogs are often confused even though they are two completely different animals. Lizards, toads, and frogs have a striking similarity when it comes to preying on cockroaches; they stick their long tongue out and once it is in their mouth; they use strong jaws to crush them completely so that they can engulf the cockroaches easily. Wasps eat cockroaches differently by laying their egg inside the body of an adult cockroach. Next, when the egg hatches, it eats the cockroach before it has a chance to fight back. When it comes to Entomopathogenic fungi, certain species of it infect the cockroaches and proceed to kill them gradually which can often take weeks.  All the listed predators have a rather different approach when it comes to preying on cockroaches. They have their individual ways in which these creatures use to make cockroaches digestible. Not only this but some people also feed cockroaches to their pets such as iguanas. The reason why cockroaches make an ideal food source for such pets is that they are inexpensive and nutritious at the same time.

Benefits of animals feeding on cockroaches

Apart from cockroaches being an excellent source of protein and other nutrients, when other animals feed on cockroaches they are doing us nothing short of a favor. When other animals prey on them, it automatically reduces the population of cockroaches which means it reduces the chances of us having to deal with a cockroach infestation. Animals like lizards take care of them which eliminates our part of dealing with them.
