What are the signs of a fly infestation?

What are the signs of a fly infestation?

Just one fly in your home can make you feel like you are going crazy. When there are a few flies in your house, you are completely focused on swatting them at the right time so it kills them. You can’t think of anything else but getting rid of all the flies.  A female fly can lay up to one hundred eggs at one time and each egg can hatch within twenty- four hours after being laid.  One sure sign you have a problem with flies is if you see just one fly. You want to immediately get rid of them so they don’t become a swarm.

Fly characteristics

A fly is black or dark gray on the body with white coloring between the eyes, which are bulging. You will find a fly near the light or in the window trying to get the natural light coming in from the sun. Every once in a while, a fly will venture out and try to fly from one room to another. While flying around, they will look for trash cans and stinky sinks. When a fly lands, they will poop before they leave. In some cases, the poop will be visible and look like little black dots clustered together, normally near the windowsill. You may also find it near trash cans and sinks. You may also find it on the top of the refrigerator as well.

Maggots

Maggots are tiny white worms that come out from an egg laid by a fly. When you see maggots, you most likely have an infestation. The females like to lay their eggs in warm, dark, and moist areas; such as trash, manure, or food that is rotting. If a fly comes into your home, they will most likely lay eggs before exiting somewhere in your home where you can’t see them. These maggots will cluster together to feed on rotten food that can fuel them to keep going.

Flies and livestock

A fly can do a lot of damage to the livestock in several ways. First, they fly around and land on feces from horses and cattle or other livestock on your farm. Once they land, female flies will lay eggs then leave. A female fly does not stay with the eggs until they hatch. Another way they pester the livestock is to land on them and bite them. While biting them, they can draw blood from the animal and cause some skin irritation to pain in the area of the bite. Because flies are nasty and filled with bacteria and other diseases, there is a chance that they could be infecting your livestock too.

What to do if you have an infestation

If you find that you have an infestation in your home or around it, you first need to find out what is attracting them to the area. Most of the time, it’s something that is foul smelling or rotten. Once you find it, throw it away from the home or move it away if possible.  If the infestation seems to be getting worse, then consider calling a professional to handle the issue or purchase a fly killer from your local home improvement store. Fly killers such as fly strips or fly catchers will take care of flies as they are flying around so they get trapped and can’t get away.
After the infestation is gone, clean the areas around the house, near the barn, or inside the home so that the flies will not be attracted to anything and will then keep flying on by.
