What to do if cockroaches are in your apartment?

Cockroaches are one of the sneakiest pests you will ever come across. They can crawl into your apartment and before you know it, your whole apartment is nothing more than a cockroach rehabilitation center. You need to avoid that situation at all costs. If you spot a cockroach in your apartment, chances are there are a lot more that you have not seen until now. Never ignore anything and do not take it lightly. You need to take some important steps if cockroaches are in your apartment. Some steps to take are mentioned below and they all focus on getting rid of the pests that are living under the same roof as you.

Bait

Baits are considered to be an effective way to kill cockroaches. It is supposed to work on a long- term basis. Baits handle cockroaches in two ways; it either kills the cockroach as soon it comes in contact or infects it with poison which can eventually contaminate other roaches as well. You can find these baits easily in all supermarkets and hardware stores around you. You need to be strategic when placing the bait which means putting them where cockroaches are usually spotted such as under the sinks or behind the fridge. You can also change the bait once every 3-4 months. You have to be careful while using this in a house that has a lot of people as the poison carries its risks.

Dust

You can use pesticide dust to get rid of cockroaches. The three common types of dust involve the following:
·      Boric acid
·      Silica
·      Diatomaceous earth
The last two affect the exoskeleton of a cockroach while boric acid can be toxic for the roach if ingested. It is best to opt for diatomaceous earth as it is not only organic but eliminates all types of bugs and pests. It also avoids the build-up of a cockroach infestation by ending it before it begins. You can sprinkle it in places where cockroaches usually are like in the cabinets or under the washbasin.

Trap

Trapping is an option you can always go for even though it may involve discarding the waste of cockroaches or handling cockroaches that are still alive. Trapping involves reeling a cockroach in and then trapping it between the metal bars. Now, sometimes during this trapping, the cockroach gets trapped in between which may end up breaking its body. If it successfully catches the cockroach, you will have an alive roach to deal with. This can be quite difficult because it is not easy and cockroaches come in huge numbers so it can become challenging.

Hire professionals

Before hiring a professional company to eliminate cockroaches from your apartment, it is advised to check with your property manager. Some apartments have leases that cover the cost of infestation in the maintenance section and this can save you a lot of money. It is an easy solution although the only drawback is the high cost. So, if you want a stress-free solution and do not mind paying a little extra, call an exterminator to solve the problem.
